Lyric Analysis

A Little Bit Longer
Jonas Brothers

Got the news today
Doctor said I had to stay
A little bit longer
And I'll be fine
When I thought it all been done
When I thought it all been said
A little bit longer
And I'll be fine

But you don't know what you got until it's gone
And you don't know what it's like to feel so low
And every time you smile or laugh, you glow
You don't even know, know, know
You don't even know

All this time goes by
Still no reason why
A little bit longer
And I'll be fine
Waitin' on the cure
But none of them are sure
A little Bit Longer
And I'll be fine

But you don't know you got until it's gone
And you don't know what it's like to feel so low
And every time you smile or laugh, your glow
You don't even know, know, know
You don't even know, know, know
You don't even know, know, know

Yeah!

But you don't know what you got until it's gone
And you don't know what it's like to feel so low, yeah!
And every time you smile or laugh, you glow
You don't even know, yeah, oh!
Yeah, ohh!
Yeah, yeah!

You don't even know, no, no!

So I wait 'til Kingdom Come
All the highs and lows have gone
A little bit longer and I'll be fine.

I'll be ... fine.

This song is a very special song as it was written by Nick Jonas to express his situation with diabetes. For example, the initial diagnosis ("Got the news today, doctor said I had to stay, a little bit longer"). To me the meaning of this song is not to take things for granted, because truly you don't understand how special something you have is, until you have it no longer. Nick is saying he took his life without diabetes for granted, because things became much more difficult when he was diagnosed. This song uses poetic devices such as repetition and rhyming. For example, it repeats "you don't even know" over several times throughout the song, meaning that you don't know what you've got until its gone. In the main course, rhyming is used (low, glow). This song is very emotional, and the lyrics have a lot of meaning.

Haikus

Summer has arrived
Endless days and fun-filled nights
Wish it wouldn't end

Warm breeze through the trees
School days are over for now
Headed to the beach

But soon you realize
This cannot last forever
Fall means back to school

My Thoughts on Poetry

I find poetry to be a good way to express your feelings. There can be a lot of emotion put into poetry; however, it is not for everyone. I like some poems, and others I do not enjoy as much. I enjoy poems that rhyme and have great rhythm, and have a meaning to them. Some poems seem completely random with no rhyme or meaning and those are the poems that I do not like. Overall, I think poems can portray a lot of emotion, and are a great way to express how you truly feel.

Choice Poem - Summer

At last the school year has come to an end
Be yourself, have fun, no need to pretend
The days are long, filled with good times
The sun's rays scream as the temperature climbs

I hear the chirping birds in the early morn
The world seems all new, like it has just been born
I can feel the gentle, warm summer breeze
I hear the buzzing of the busy bees

The sun shines bright as the day grows warm
Distant thunder rumbles, it's about to storm
The dancing trees sway and wave hello
As the soothing wind picks up and begins to blow

But then the day's over and soon night with fall
The nocturnal owl calls out to all
The coyotes yelp to the shining silver moon
But summer's nearly over, and fall will come soon

Where I'm From

I am from sunshine,
from Kraft Dinner and a yellow slide.
I am from the farm that has been in the family for generations,
from the yellow brick house atop the hill.
I am from the wind that blows harder at home than anywhere else,
from the trees that never change colour.

I am from watching Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday night,
and spending the holiday season baking in Grandma's kitchen.
I am from cold nights in an uninsulated upstairs,
and picking corn from the field on a hot summer day.
I am from "treat others as you would like to be treated",
and "if at first you don't succeed; try, try again".
I am from Sunday School every week as a child,
and church suppers with 40 pies each spring and fall.
From playing piano at different services, and penny collection.

I'm from Grandma & Papa and the Fisher family farm,
from roast beef dinners, and chicken wings while watching sporting events.
From being born right in the midst of the wild storm of '95,
from the caesar salad my mom makes better than anyone else I know,
to my Dad's many attempts at making beef a new way,
and the baseball bat that split open my brother's head.

I am from the picture frames placed around the house,
from the bottom drawer of the buffet table in the dining room.
But most of all I'm from the memories stored within our hearts,
never to be forgotten.
